For many years Wertheim was home to Peden Barracks, a US Army installation. The US Army left Peden Barracks in the early 1990s as part of the post Cold War reorganization of US armed forces in Germany. In 1938, Wertheim was merged with Tauberbischofsheim into the newly created district Landkreis Tauberbischofsheim.
The United States Army has over 40 military installations in Germany, two of which are scheduled to close. Over 220 others have already been closed, mostly following the end of the Cold War in the 1990s.

Fliegerhorst Wertheim lies above the city of Wertheim and was constructed beginning in 1936. Along with the grass airfield, extensive barracks were built, too, with a casino, billets, staff buildings, etc.
27 de sept. de 2015 · Wertheim was once home to the US Army's Peden Barracks, which was closed in the 1990s. It seems some of the residents still remember those days, as I do. I found this sign at the Gasthaus Zum Goldenen Adler, the oldest German pub in Wertheim, at over 100 years old.
