Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961), born in Oak Park, Illinois, started his career as a writer in a newspaper office in Kansas City at the age of seventeen. After the United States entered the First World War, he joined a volunteer ambulance unit in the Italian army.
Hemingway’s life and work were profoundly informed by war. As a young man, he was wounded in World War I, and he experienced the Spanish Civil War and World War II as a war correspondent. In some ways, one might even claim that war is Hemingway’s main subject.

He once mentioned to Mary, who became his fourth wife, that he might “attend” the Korean War, but nothing ever came of it.
