James Austin Murray’s monochromatic paintings are exclusively produced in Ivory Black oil paint, creating apparently three-dimensional spaces. Murray has exhibited in New York, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Singapore, Monaco, Chicago, and Miami. His works are in the collections of the Kimpton Hotel Palomar Philadelphia, Tom Ford, and Thomas Pheasant in Washington D.C.

James Austin Murray, b. 1969 . USA . About a decade ago, New York-based James Austin Murray moved from figurative to abstract work on small canvases, limiting himself to black oil paint. The forced constraint was unpredictably liberating to the artist, providing an intense focus and the opportunity to explore the boundaries of his chosen material.
On the Return features new work from painter James Austin Murray who continues to demand that we put aside preconceived perceptions of light and dark. Murray rakes, scrapes, and physically moves his thickly applied black paint making the flat surface expand and contract, ripple, and pulse.
