In addition to the pillar of Everglades wildlife, the American alligator, Florida’s lush wetlands harbor snakes, peacocks, deer, manatees, and the elusive Florida panther. While some of these critters are as commonplace as the area’s mangroves, others only show themselves to very lucky visitors.

Most animals in the Everglades are adapted for water, wetland or marine environments, but a large number of mammals live on land in the Everglades, as well. More than 40 species of mammals live in the Florida Everglades.
The Everglades' most endangered animal, a mammal, is the Florida panther. Fewer than 100 individuals now survive. Other well-known Everglades mammals are water-dwellers, such as the bottlenose dolphin and the West Indian manatee , which is also endangered.
