Danse macabre es uno de los cuatro poemas tonales que Saint-Saëns compuso en la década de 1870, todos inspirados hasta cierto punto por ejemplos de Franz Liszt (cuyo propio Totentanz data de 1849) y que exploran tanto el concepto de transformación temática como la instrumentación novedosa de Liszt.
