Doc Hudson, also known as the Fabulous Hudson Hornet, was a Piston Cup racer from 1951 to 1954. From late 2005 to 2009, Doc was the crew chief of 7-time Piston Cup champion Lightning McQueen. Doc was and still is a great inspiration to many racers including The King, Dale Earnhardt Sr, Lightning McQueen, and many others.

Doc Hudson started racing in the Piston Cup series in 1951, the same year his car model debuted: this technically would make him, in real life, the true first rookie winning the Piston Cup. His license plate is 51HHMD, which is a reference to his year and track number (51), model (Hudson Hornet) and profession (medical doctor).
In memory of Doc, the Piston Cup Racing Series ' trophy was renamed the Hudson Hornet Piston Cup, and the Racing Museum now contains memorabilia related to Doc, including old newspapers, and Doc's trophies.

The 1951, 1952, and 1953 Piston Cups were won by the Fabulous Hudson Hornet. The 1954 Piston Cup saw Hudson Hornet suffer a major crash which forced him to quit the racing world, which occurs before the events of the first film.
