Downside School (simply referred to as Downside) is an 11–18 mixed, Roman Catholic, independent, day and boarding school in Stratton-on-the-Fosse, Somerset, England. It was established in 1614 and is located in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Clifton.
Downside Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in England and the senior community of the English Benedictine Congregation. Until 2019, the community had close links with Downside School, for the education of children aged eleven to eighteen.
Downside Abbey. Downside Abbey church, one of only four minor basilicas in England, has been designated by English heritage as a Grade I listed building. The foundation stone of the Abbey was laid in 1878 and the first section of the church, including the abbey tower, was finished by 1882.
The Building of the Downside Abbey. In 1878 the building of the Abbey Church began. One of England’s finest Gothic churches, the Abbey Church still serves as the School’s main place of worship for Sunday Mass, weekly hymn practice, the Advent Carol Service and other services.

DOWNSIDE SCHOOL FEES FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/25: One-off nights on an ad hoc basis, subject to availability, will be charged at £60 per night in the Junior School and £75 in the Senior School. EXEATS: The School remains open for international boarders over the Exeat weekends at a fee of £225 per child, per weekend.
