February 2, 1848 - The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican War with Mexico relinquishing its rights to Texas above the Rio Grande River and ceding New Mexico and California to the United States. The United States also gained claims to Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and part of Colorado.

The United States became a continental nation with the purchase of Louisiana from France in 1803 and the settlement of the lands beyond the Appalachian Mountains. Westward expansion fueled conflict with Native populations and led to their forced removal.
In the early nineteenth century, the United States expanded rapidly, fueled by new technology, growing markets, and the extension of democracy to all white men. But this prosperity came at a cost, gobbling up the lands of Native Americans in the West and the labor of enslaved people in the South.
