He evidently engineered the murder of Mary’s second husband, Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley, thereby precipitating the revolt of the Scottish nobles and Mary’s flight to England, where she was imprisoned by Queen.

  4. About this artwork. James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, is a notorious figure in Scottish history. He is most associated with the murder of Mary, Queen of Scots’, second husband, Lord Darnley. Then abducting Mary, raping her and forcing her hand in marriage.

  5. On this day in Tudor history, 14th April 1578, Mary, Queen of Scots' third husband, James Hepburn, Duke of Orkney and 4th Earl of Bothwell, died at Dragsholm Castle in Denmark. He'd been held at the castle in appalling conditions and it was said that he'd gone insane.

  6. The king of Denmark kept him in prison as a useful pawn, first in Malmö, then in Dragsholm on Zealand, where he died insane. His embalmed body is preserved in a crypt in the church at Faarvejle nearby.
