Augustus, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, was the second son of Ernst II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and Princess Charlotte of Saxe-Meiningen. He was the author of a poetic novel, Cyllenion: A year in Arcadia, which is thought to include the first unprejudiced treatment of the theme of homosexual love since antiquity.
Augusta was the daughter of Frederick II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and Magdalena Augusta of Anhalt-Zerbst. She married Frederick, Prince of Wales, the eldest son of George II who died in 1757 before becoming King. Augusta's role as collector or patron is perhaps most notable in portraiture.
