Duke, son of Washington Duke and brother of James Buchanan Duke, was a member of one of the most prominent families that existed in the American South at the turn of the 20th century.
Benjamin Newton Duke, tobacco and textile entrepreneur and philanthropist, was the primary benefactor of Trinity College after it relocated to Durham in 1892. He also was the principal link between the Duke family and the college and university until his death in 1929.
