Deptford St Nicholas was a civil parish in the metropolitan area of London, England. The creation of the parish accompanied the building of the Church of St Paul's, Deptford, constructed by the Commission for Building Fifty New Churches to meet the demands of the growing population.
Deptford is an area on the south bank of the River Thames in southeast London, in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and London Borough of Lewisham. It is named after a ford of the River Ravensbourne. From the mid 16th century to the late 19th it was home to Deptford Dockyard, the first of the Royal Dockyards.
In October 1940, incendiary bombs fell on the church; the beautiful interior of St Nicholas’ as it is today is the result of the ingenuity and inspiration of Mr Alan Ford and the artistic gifts of the Revd Kenneth Francis, who was vicar during the period of restoration in 1958.
