Saxe-Gotha ( German: Sachsen-Gotha) was one of the Saxon duchies held by the Ernestine branch of the Wettin dynasty in the former Landgraviate of Thuringia. The ducal residence was erected at Gotha .
Ducal standard of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The Duchy was born when the arbitration of the King of Saxony, Frederick Augustus, produced the Treaty of Hildburghausen on 12 November 1826 for the Gothaische Teilung (Gothan Division), the extensive rearrangement of the Ernestine duchies.
The first duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was Ernest I, who reigned from 1826 until his death in 1844. He had previously been Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (as Ernest III) from 1806 until the duchy was reorganized in 1826.

Queen Victoria herself was the last monarch of the House of Hanover. The House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha as a British dynasty was short-lived.
Ernest I (born Jan. 2, 1784, Coburg, Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld [Germany]—died Jan. 29, 1844, Gotha, Saxe-Coburg-Gotha) was the duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (as Ernest III) from 1806 and then, from 1826, duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. He was the uncle of Queen Victoria and the father of her husband, Prince Albert.

Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (1784-1844), was the eldest son of Franz, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, whom he succeeded in 1806. He succeeded to the Duchy of Gotha in 1826 through his marriage to Louisa Saxe-Gotha. He was Prince Albert’s father and Queen Victoria’s uncle.

When the house of Saxe-Gotha and Altenburg became extinct in 1825, Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg was split.
