Some say it was when Christopher Columbus set foot on American soil. Others, when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door. Some claim that it was when Donatello finished his statue of David.
The early modern period is a term used by historians for the period in Western Europe and its first colonies which spans the three centuries between the Middle Ages and the Industrial Revolution. The early modern period is characterized by the rise to importance of science and technological progress, civic politics and the nation state.
Volume III surveys the forging of modern Europe from 1789 to the First World War and finally Volume IV examines the period from 1914 to the present. The four volumes will combine chronological and thematic approaches to the past and will survey Europe in its entirety, from the Atlantic to Russia's Urals, and will situate European developments within a global context.
