Duke of Northumberland is a noble title that has been created three times in English and British history, twice in the Peerage of England and once in the Peerage of Great Britain. The current holder of this title is Ralph Percy, 12th Duke of Northumberland .
The Percy family is an English noble family. They were among the most powerful noble families in Northern England for much of the Middle Ages. The noble family is known for its long rivalry with the House of Neville, another family powerful in northern England during the 15th century.
The 12th Duke of Northumberland, Ralph Percy, who inherited the dukedom on the death of his elder brother, Henry (1953 – 1995), owns 132,000 acres of land, mainly rented out to tenant farmers. Retaining control of so much land over the centuries was due in equal measure to good judgement and good fortune.
Ralph inherited the dukedom of Northumberland after the death of his elder brother in 1995. As well as managing the more traditional estate businesses of agriculture, forestry and minerals, the Duke has overseen expansion of the portfolio to include planning and development and commercial property.
In February 2019, ‘Lions of the North’, a publication penned by Ralph Percy, the 12th Duke of Northumberland, made its debut. The book delves into the extensive and dynamic history of Alnwick Castle and the Percy lineage.
