Sicilia ( AFI: IPA /siˈʧilja/ 1 ; Sicilia en lengua siciliana 2 , Səcəlia en galoitálico de Sicilia, Siçillja en arbëresh dialecto del idioma albanés 3 , Σικελία en griego moderno) 4 es una de las veinte regiones de Italia que conforman la República Italiana.
Sicily ( Italian: Sicilia, pronounced [siˈtʃiːlja] ⓘ; Sicilian: Sicilia, [sɪˈ (t)ʃiːlja] ⓘ) is the largest and most populous island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of the 20 regions of Italy. It is one of the five Italian autonomous regions and is officially referred to as Regione Siciliana.
La isla de Sicilia ha estado habitada desde la Prehistoria. De la época del Paleolítico quedan restos en el litoral septentrional ( Trápani ), y del neolítico en lugares como Termini Imerese. Los habitantes originarios de Sicilia fueron tres grupos definidos de los pueblos antiguos de Italia.
Syracuse is located in the southeast corner of the island of Sicily, next to the Gulf of Syracuse beside the Ionian Sea. It is situated in a drastic rise of land with 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) depths being close to the city offshore although the city itself is generally not so hilly in comparison.

Sicily was merged with the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. Although today an Autonomous Region, with special statute, of the Republic of Italy, it has its own distinct culture. Sicily is both the largest region of the modern state of Italy and the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea.
