Reigning over the County of Schwarzburg and founded by Sizzo I of Schwarzburg (died 1160), the family split in the 16th century into the lines of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, with the Sondershausen line dying out in 1909.
About 65 km southeast of Erfurt lie the palace and village of Schwarzburg in the Schwarza valley – on a cutting on the northeastern slope of the Thuringian Slate Mountains, which the Schwarza River, that gave the castle its name, partially washed out to form a deep gorge.

A la muerte sin descendencia del príncipe Gunter Víctor en 1925, le sucedió el príncipe Sizzo (1860-1926) que era hijo del príncipe Federico Gunter (1793-1867) y de su segunda esposa, de un matrimonio morganático.
