The city of Darmstadt established a new artists' colony in the 1960s. Seven ateliers and residences were erected between 1965 and 1967 according to plans by Rolf Prange, Rudolf Kramer, Bert Seidel, Heribert Hausmann and Reinhold Kargel.

This time, not only the members of the Darmstadt artists' colony Joseph Maria Olbrich, Albin Müller, Heinrich Jobst, the brothers Friedrich Wilhelm and Christian Heinrich Kleukens, Josef Emil Schneckendorf, Jacob Julius Scharvogel, Daniel Greiner and Ernst Riegel presented their works.

An important figure in the establishment of the Colony and the promotion of the applied arts in Germany was Darmstadt‐based Alexander Koch, who had published and edited the journal Innendekoration (1891–1939) and Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration (1897–1933).
