The Hackney is a recognized breed of horse that was developed in Great Britain. In recent decades, the breeding of the Hackney has been directed toward producing horses that are ideal for carriage driving. They are an elegant high stepping breed of carriage horse that is popular for showing in harness events.

Stallions tend to be larger and more muscular than mares and horses who are gelded early on in life. Hackney Ponies, which originated from Hackney horses that were bred to Welsh and Fell ponies, stand at 14.2 hands high and under.
Hackney, stylish carriage horse breed, now used primarily as a show horse. It was developed in the 18th century by crossing Thoroughbreds with the Norfolk trotter, a large-sized trotting harness horse originating in and around Norfolk. An important sire was the Shales horse (about 1760).
