The dynasty rose to prominence when Count Christian I of Oldenburg was elected King of Denmark in 1448, of Norway in 1450 and of Sweden in 1457. The house then occupied the Danish throne continuously for 576 years until the abdication of Queen Margrethe II in 2024.

Schloss Oldenburg (Oldenburg palace) is a schloss, or palace, in the city of Oldenburg in the present-day state of Lower Saxony, Germany. The first castle on the site was built around 1100 and became the ancestral home of the House of Oldenburg .

History. The royal and noble house was founded in 1101 by Elimar I, Count of Oldenburg. Their paternal ancestry is obscure other than the fact that they are Germanic, emerging as counts in an area known as Oldenburg in Northern Germany which was for a time a vassal-state of the Duchy of Saxony.
