Since 1965 Richmond has formed part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. As of 2011 [update] it had a population of 21,469 (in the North Richmond and South Richmond wards). It has a significant commercial and retail centre with a developed day and evening economy.

The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames ( pronunciation ⓘ) in southwest London, England, forms part of Outer London and is the only London borough on both sides of the River Thames. It was created in 1965 when three smaller council areas amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963.
Richmond is a beautiful historic town with excellent transport links, making it an attractive location for a wide range of businesses. On a meander of the River Thames, it has several parks and open spaces and is the gateway to many of the borough’s tourist attractions, including Richmond Park, Little Lanes and Richmond Hill.
