Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (Sophia Charlotte; 19 May 1744 – 17 November 1818) was Queen of Great Britain and Ireland as the wife of King George III from their marriage on 8 September 1761 until her death in 1818. Princess Sophie Charlotte was born in 1744 in the Palace of Mirow in a little known principality of Mecklenberg-Strelitz, in what is now part of Germany. It was an idyllic location in which to grow up. The castle, on a lake and surrounded by woods, resembled something out of Beauty and the Beast.
