Amadeus III adopted as the family heraldic charge the cross of Savoy. He led many Savoyard knights alongside his nephew, King Louis VII of France, on the Second Crusade and died in 1148 on Cyprus, where he was buried in the Abbey of the Holy Cross.

The abbey was founded in 1125 by Amadeus of Lausanne and Count Amadeus III of Savoy, built in the 12th century by Cistercian monks, destroyed after the French Revolution, and consequently restored by the Fondation d’Hautecombe.
