This is a list of members of the Australian Senate following the 2022 Australian federal election held on 21 May 2022. Terms for newly elected senators representing the Australian states begin on 1 July 2022.
The 2022 Australian federal election in the Senate was held on 21 May 2022 to elect 40 of the 76 senators in the Australian Senate, after a six-week campaign. Senators elected at this election took office on 1 July 2022, with the exception of the Senators elected from two territories whose terms commenced from election day.
The upper house of the Australian Parliament is the Senate, which consists of 76 members. Like the United States Senate, on which it was partly modelled, the Australian Senate includes an equal number of senators from each state, regardless of population. Unlike it however, the Australian Senate has always been directly elected.
The current president is Sue Lines, who was elected on 26 July 2022. The Senate elects one of its members as president at the start of each new term, or whenever the position is vacant. This is usually—though not necessarily—a member of the party or coalition that holds the most seats in the Senate.
