Graylingwell Hospital (formerly the West Sussex County Asylum, or West Sussex County Lunatic Asylum) was a psychiatric hospital in Chichester, West Sussex, United Kingdom.
9 de feb. de 2024 · Graylingwell Hospital, to the north of Chichester, opened in July 1897. It was originally built as the West Sussex County Asylum to ease overcrowding at the main county asylum at Haywards Health. The hospital was for ‘pauper lunatics’.
27 de mar. de 2024 · THE history of one of the country’s most famous mental health institutions has been unearthed in a new book. Beneath the Water Tower, which is released this week, brings together the stories and voices of Graylingwell Hospital following a year-long heritage project of the institution.
New farm buildings, an isolation hospital and support buildings were built on the fringes of the site. The hospital opened with three ward blocks on either side, a few years after the opening of the Asylum, a further two female wards, and a single male block were constructed.
The single-storey former isolation hospital, built at the same time as the main hospital building, stands 170m north-east of the administration block. Further buildings, constructed in the C20, include a nurses' home standing 130m north-west of the administration building, and to the west of this Summersdale Hospital (1933).
