  1. James Hamilton, 3rd Earl of Arran (1537–1609) was a Scottish nobleman and soldier who opposed the French-dominated regency during the Scottish Reformation. He was the eldest son of James Hamilton, Duke of Châtellerault, sometime regent of Scotland.

  2. His grandson was declared insane in 1562 and the title passed to the king's favourite Captain James Stewart in 1581. In 1609, the second Marquess of Hamilton inherited the earldom. In 1643, the third Marquess was made Duke of Hamilton and received a second grant of the earldom of Arran.

  3. James Hamilton, 3rd earl of Arran (1537?−1609) was twice considered as a husband to royalty: to Mary Stuart, the queen of Scotland, and to Elizabeth I, the queen of England. He was confined for insanity after 1562.
