The King's School, Chester, is a co-educational private day school for pupils aged 4 to 18. It is one of the seven 'King's Schools' established (or re-endowed and renamed) by King Henry VIII in 1541 after the Dissolution of the Monasteries. It is situated outside the city of Chester, England.
We’ve been around for more than 475 years, but our Senior School never stands still. It is an exciting, energising and empowering community of learning. King’s is regularly named as the top performing school in Cheshire for GCSEs. In 2023, 27% of GCSE results were grade 9, with 51% at 9/8 and 84% 9/6.

King’s is one of the seven famous Cathedral Schools established by Henry VIII in 1541. Today we are a thriving, forward-thinking, independent day school with 740 pupils. Our History. The King’s School has a proud history which forms the bedrock of the current modern, dynamic school. The School was founded in 1541 by King Henry VIII following the dissolution of St Werburgh’s Abbey, which became Chester Cathedral. The School was housed in the former Monastic Refectory for most of the next 400 years until 1869.
