Proto punk refers to bands that didn't fit the counter culture, base off the performance and the way bands played, often loud and energetic. Garage rock bands are labeled as Proto punk, bands like The Stooges and the MC5, along with glam rock bands such as New York Dolls and Hollywood Brats.
