  4. Robert Stewart was the son of Robert II, King of Scots and Elizabeth Mure born 1339. Robert was created Earl of Menteith in 1361 and Earl of Fife in 1371. He served as Governor of Scotland from 1388 until his death in 1420. Finally, he was created Duke of Albany on April 28, 1398, Earl of Atholl September 2, 1403 and Earl of Buchan in 1406.

Robert, Duke of Albany, was widely suspected to be responsible, however an inquiry by the Scottish Council exonerated him. History, however, has never exonerated him.
