They were a pair of sisters named Margaret and Frances MacDonald, who, along with their Glasgow School of Art classmates Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Herbert MacNair, comprised the Glasgow Four.
Frances MacDonald MacNair (24 August 1873 – 12 December 1921) was a Scottish artist whose design work was a prominent feature of the Modern Style (British Art Nouveau style) during the 1890s.

Margaret and Frances MacDonald, among history’s all-but-forgotten characters, were also among the artists to establish the aesthetic principles of Art Nouveau. Two women from Glasgow in Scotland were among the creators who dictated the aesthetic base of the artistic movement which illuminated Europe between 1890 and 1915.
