His mother worked as a schoolteacher and taught Latin, French, and music for more than 30 years in the state schools of West London. She died at the age of 67 of pancreatic cancer. On Inside the Actors Studio in 2002, Grant credited his mother with "any acting genes that [he] might have".
His mother, Fyvola Susan (MacLean), was a teacher. His father, James Murray Grant, was an artist and carpet salesman, and his grandfather was in the British Army during WWII. He is of mostly Scottish and English descent, with many recent ancestors who were prominent in the military.

He only ever saw acting as a creative outlet, and joined the Oxford University Dramatic Society. His first film was 1982's Privileged, produced by the Oxford University Film Foundation.
