World War I. Sir John Monash (born June 27, 1865, West Melbourne, Austl.—died Oct. 8, 1931, Melbourne) was a civil engineer and soldier, best known for his role as commander of the Australian army corps in France during World War I. Monash attended Scotch College and Melbourne University, obtaining degrees in the arts, civil engineering, and law.
Named after prominent World War I general Sir John Monash, it was founded in 1958 and is the second oldest university in the state. The university has a number of campuses, four of which are in Victoria ( Clayton, Caulfield, Peninsula, and Parkville ), one in Malaysia and another one in Indonesia.
Post-war, Sir John Monash was the first General Manager of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. Later he became the Vice-Chancellor of The University of Melbourne. As well as being a founding member of the Rotary Club of Melbourne, Australia’s first Rotary Club, he was also the founding president of the Zionist Federation of Australia and New Zealand.
