1821. A colony of former American slaves is founded in Africa. The colony becomes the independent nation of Liberia in 1847. Gas lighting, supplied by coal-distillation plants, is provided for homes in Baltimore. Within ten years homes in New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia will also have gas lights. 1822
