Born in Miami, Florida, as Bessie Regina Norris on December 21, 1953, Wright was the youngest of seven children of Rosa Akins Braddy-Wright and her second husband, McArthur Norris. Wright began her professional career at the age of two when her siblings formed the Echoes of Joy, a gospel group.

As passionate as Betty Wright was about her art and her community, both took a backseat to the role she loved most- mother to her five children (Namphuyo, Patrice, Patrick, Chaka, and Asher). In the liner notes of her 1994 album B-Attitudes, Betty dedicated the album to her children, proclaiming them the “loves of her life”.
