Kommando Nowotny became operational on the 3rd of October and claimed their first kill, a B-24, on October 7th. Nowotny began the practice of using prop-driven conventional fighters as cover against the roaming Allied fighters during the takeoffs and landings of the Me 262.
Worse was to come on the afternoon of Nov. 8 when Major Walter Nowotny, the Kommando’s renowned leader and one of the most highly decorated pilots in the Luftwaffe, finally took off to engage the enemy in an Me 262.
JG 7 named itself after Walter Nowotny and was led by Johannes Steinhoff. In less than two months of operating against the Allies on the Western Front, Kommando Nowotny claimed 22 victories, proving that the future of aerial combat would be dominated by turbine powered fighters.
