This list is based on MPC's periodically published and revised "List Of Observatory Codes". Over time, the number of astronomical observatories worldwide has been growing constantly. As of May 2016, MPC's official list contains a total of 1972 observatories.

This is a partial list of astronomical observatories ordered by name, along with initial dates of operation (where an accurate date is available) and location. The list also includes a final year of operation for many observatories that are no longer in operation.

A code is unique for a certain location and consists of three digits or one letter and two digits. In this representation, we give the observatory code, the geocentric coordinates, and the observatory designation.
