History The entrance sign to Mount St. Mary's University. Mount Saint Mary's was founded by French émigré Father John DuBois. In 1805, Father DuBois bought land near Emmitsburg, Maryland on the mountain that Catholic colonists had christened "St. Mary's Mountain," and laid the cornerstone for Saint-Mary's-on-the-Hill church.

The history of Mount St. Mary's University begins in the creation of Maryland, founded by George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, as a refuge of religious freedom and includes centuries of graduating ethical leaders who lead lives of significance in service to God an others.
MSMU History. Mount Saint Mary’s University was founded in 1925 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet (CSJs), a group of bold visionary educators who sought to establish an institution of higher learning where women could become leaders dedicated to service, justice and knowledge.
As the oldest independent Catholic university in the United States, we are rooted in tradition, yet we are also Catholic in a contemporary way. Our dynamic higher education environment is committed to our mission, which includes an awareness of the diversity of the world in which we live.
