    Pedro Juan Caballero was a leading figure of Paraguayan independence. He was born in Tobatí, a town located Cordillera Department of Paraguay which was then part of the Spanish Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. He was one of the major leaders of the Revolution of May 14, 1811, despite being six years younger than the leading figure of Independence period Fulgencio Yegros and 20 years younger than the future dictator of Paraguay José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia.     Caballero participated in the Battle of Tacuarí and Battle of Paraguari against the army led by Manuel Belgrano. Paraguayan victory at the January 19, 1811 Battle of Paraguari forced Belgrano to retreat southward. On March 9, 1811, on the banks of River Tacuarí, while Belgrano awaited reinforcements from Buenos Aires, another battle was launched and won by Paraguayans. Belgrano called for capitulation, which was granted, and his troops left Province of Paraguay.

    Military victories against the troops sent by the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata increased Paraguayan determination to create and safeguard their own state.     Die Stadt ist vor allem ein Handels- und Einkaufszentrum, in Brasilien bekannt für billigen Alkohol und Konsumgüter, sowie als Zentrum für den Drogenhandel und Schmuggel mit gefälschten Textilien und Elektronikartikeln. In Pedro Juan Caballero gibt es mit China Shopping eines der bekanntesten Einkaufszentren von Paraguay. Bei Pedro Juan Caballero liegt der Flugplatz Aeropuerto Doctor Fuster. Die Stadt liegt am Endpunkt der Nationalstraße Ruta 5, die von Concepciónher kommt.

    Im März 2017 kam es verstärkt zu tödlichen Gewaltdelikten. Insbesondere stehen sich dort die Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) und das Comando Vermelho (CV) gegenüber. Dabei handelt es sich zum zwei der größten auf den Handel mit Kokain und Marihuana ausgerichteten brasilianischen Gruppierungen der organisierten Kriminalität. Der ehemalige Innenminister Rafael Filizzolaäußerte in diesem Zusammenhang, dass Pedro Juan Caballero zu den Städten in der Region und möglicherweise sogar weltweit gehöre, die die höchste Gewaltkriminalitätsrate aufweisen. Derzeit gäbe es dort jährlich rund 80 Morde je 100.000 Einwohner.

    Der Bürgermeister von Pedro Juan Caballero ist seit 2006 José Carlos Acevedo vom Partido Liberal Radical Auténtico(PLRA).

    Seit 1940 spielt der Fussballclub Independiente Futbol Club in Pedro Juan Caballero. Sein Stadion heißt La Caldera del Diablo.
