Karuizawa has three public elementary school and one public middle school operated by the town government, and one public high school is operated by the Nagano Prefectural Board of Education. The UWC ISAK Japaninternational school is also located in the town.

現在は避暑地・観光の町として知られる軽井沢。 その誕生のきっかけをご存じだろうか。 避暑地としての軽井沢のスタートは1886年（明治19年）、カナダ生まれの宣教師アレキサンダー・クロフト・ショー氏が当地を訪れ、その美しい清澄な自然と気候に感嘆し、家族、友人たちにそのすばらしさを推奨して、その夏この地へ避暑に訪れたのが最初だと言われている。 明治21年には旧軽井沢の大塚山に簡素な別荘を建て、内外の知名人に軽井沢が保健と勉学の適地として紹介したため、ショー氏の友人たちである宣教師の別荘が年を追って建ち始めた。 そして明治26年には初めての日本人所有の別荘も建てられた。
