Duke Maximilian Joseph of Bavaria (4 December 1808 – 15 November 1888), known informally as Max in Bayern, was a member of a junior branch of the royal House of Wittelsbach who were Kings of Bavaria, and a promoter of Bavarian folk-music.

Duke Maximilian Emanuel in Bavaria. Born on 7 December 1849 in Munich, Maximilian Emanuel was the tenth and youngest child of Duke Maximilian Joseph in Bavaria and Princess Ludovika of Bavaria. He expressed an interest in the army at a young age, becoming a second lieutenant in the 2nd Royal Bavarian Uhlans in 1865. [1]

The Electorate of Bavaria ( German: Kurfürstentum Bayern) was a quasi-independent hereditary electorate of the Holy Roman Empire from 1623 to 1806, when it was succeeded by the Kingdom of Bavaria. [2] The Wittelsbach dynasty which ruled the Duchy of Bavaria was the younger branch of the family which also ruled the Electoral Palatinate.
