フランス革命の過程で1792年に成立したフランス最初の共和政政体（1792～1804年）。 男性普通選挙で選ばれた国民公会において王政廃止を決議して実現。 急進的なジャコバン派独裁政権の下で、封建制の無償廃止など革命が推進されたが、1794年にテルミドールのクーデタでロベスピエールが倒され、穏健な共和派による総裁政府が成立した。 しかし、1799年のブリュメール18日のクーデタでナポレオンが権力掌握、1804年に帝政を開始し、共和政は終わった。 フランス革命 は、ブルボン王朝の絶対王政を倒し、その基盤である封建社会を変革する戦いであった。 しかし、かならずしも最初からブルジョワジーが権力を奪取して共和政を実現するという目標が定まっていたわけではなかった。
