Se cree que durante la Edad Media la isla mayor también era conocida como Vigano y más tarde como Spinalonga, que viene a significar "espina larga" y surgió probablemente por la forma de la isla, que recuerda a una espina. The Giudecca Canal (Venetian: Canal de ła Zueca) is a body of water that flows into the San Marco basin in Venice, Italy. It is one of the major canals in the city, it bisects the sestieri of Dorsoduro , separating Giudecca island and district from Dorsoduro district.

Even though the island is a neighborhood of Venice, it is still quite different from the more popular part of the city and is not yet as crowded with tourists as Venice is.
