Wikipedia, a free-content online encyclopedia written and maintained by a community of volunteers known as Wikipedians, began with its first edit on 15 January 2001, two days after the domain was registered. [2] It grew out of Nupedia, a more structured free encyclopedia, as a way to allow easier and faster drafting of articles and translations.
Awarded the Erasmus Prize in 2015 alongside Wales and the broader Wikipedia community, the site has become one of history‘s largest collaborative knowledge ecosystems with over 50 million articles in 300 languages. Sanger also helped spawn the principles and philosophies underpinning the free culture movement.
Lawrence Mark Sanger (born July 16, 1968) is an American internet project developer. He worked with Jimmy Wales to create the online encyclopedias, Nupedia and Wikipedia before he created his own online encyclopedias Digital Universe and Citizendium.
