The Newmarket Stakes is a Listed flat horse race in Great Britain open to three-year-old colts and geldings. It is run over a distance of 1 mile and 2 furlongs (2,012 metres) on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket in late April or early May.
The Great Fire of Newmarket. The Great Fire of Newmarket erupts in stables near St. Mary’s Church causing the King and his brother, the Duke of York, to leave town early. Their early departure thwarts the Rye House Plot to assassinate them. The King visits Newmarket for the last time in 1684, a year before his death.
