The Bodley Head is an English book publishing imprint of Penguin Random House. Founded in 1887 by John Lane and Elkin Mathews, The Bodley Head existed as an independent entity or as part of multiple consortiums until it was acquired by Random House in 1987 alongside sister companies Jonathan Cape and Chatto & Windus.

John Lane (14 March 1854 – 2 February 1925) was a British publisher who co-founded The Bodley Head with Charles Elkin Mathews. [1] Career. John Lane was born into a farming family in West Putford, Devon on 14 March 1854. [2] [3] He moved to London in his teens.

The Bodley Head was founded in 1887 as a partnership between Charles Elkin Mathews and John Lane. It was named after Sir Thomas Bodley, founder of the Bodleian Library at Oxford. The firm used the head of Bodley as its insignia.
