The army rank of captain (from the French capitaine) is a commissioned officer rank historically corresponding to the command of a company of soldiers. The rank is also used by some air forces and marine forces , but usually refers to a more senior officer.
Chesley Burnett " Sully " Sullenberger III (born January 23, 1951) is an American retired fighter pilot, diplomat, and airline pilot. He is best known for his actions as captain of US Airways Flight 1549 in 2009, when he ditched the plane, landing on the Hudson River after both engines were disabled by a bird strike.

Robert Piché (born November 5, 1952) is a Canadian pilot. On August 24, 2001, he was captain of the Airbus A330 flying Air Transat Flight 236 and managed to land the aircraft safely in the Azores after it lost all power due to fuel exhaustion. As of April 2024, this remains a record glide length for a commercial aircraft in non powered flight.
