Eritrea, oficialmente el Estado de Eritrea (en tigriña: ሃገረ ኤርትራ, romanizado: Hagere Ertra; en árabe: دولة إرتريا , romanizado: Dawlat Irītriyā), es un país situado al noreste de África.
Eritrea (/ ˌ ɛr ɪ ˈ t r iː ə / ⓘ ERR-ih-TREE-ə or /-ˈ t r eɪ-/- TRAY-; Tigrinya: ኤርትራ, romanized: Ertra, pronounced [ʔer(ɨ)trä] ⓘ), officially the State of Eritrea, is a country in the Horn of Africa region of Eastern Africa, with its capital and largest city at Asmara.
La historia de Eritrea es la historia del territorio del actual estado de Eritrea. Hasta 1890 el nombre Eritrea sólo fue la versión italiana de la palabra griega "Erythraia", tomada del nombre que los antiguos griegos daban al Mar Rojo .
La Eritrea italiana se convirtió en la primera colonia del Reino de Italia en África y recibió una numerosa colonia de italianos, que le dieron un enorme desarrollo. En el censo de 1939 en Eritrea había casi 100.000 italianos en una población total de un millón de habitantes, siendo la capital Asmara el centro de un desarrollo arquitectónico e industrial de primer orden en África.

Eritrea tiene 121 230 km² y se encuentra ubicado en el denominado Cuerno de África. Linda por el este y noreste con el Mar Rojo, por el oeste y noroeste con Sudán y por el sur con Yibuti y Etiopía . Mantiene 2234 kilómetros de costa, de los cuales 1151 son del continente con el Mar Rojo, y 1083 de las islas con el mismo mar.
