Establishment of St Petersburg University. In January 1724, the decree signed by Peter the Great established the Academy with University and Gymnasium as its part which trained future specialists for the Academy. That’s when the history of the university education in Russia started. It was the era of the Academic University.
Saint Petersburg State University, coeducational state institution of higher learning in St. Petersburg, founded in 1819 as the University of St. Petersburg. During World War II the university was evacuated to Saratov. The university’s buildings were severely damaged during the Siege of Leningrad.
