  1. Charles Perry (17 February 1807 – 2 December 1891) was an English Australian, who served as the first Anglican Bishop of Melbourne and was a university administrator. Early life. Perry was born in Hackney, Middlesex, the third son of John Perry, sheriff of Essex and shipbuilder, and his second wife, Mary, daughter of George Green.

  5. 1846 – First Bishop of Melbourne, Charles Perry, appointed. 1847 – Charles Perry consecrated Bishop in Westminster Abbey, and Royal Letters Patent of 25 June create the See of Melbourne. 1850 – Bishop Perry convenes a conference of clergy and lay people from parishes to consider the future organisation of the diocese.

  6. Charles Perry (1807-1891) was consecrated the first Bishop of Melbourne at Westminster Abbey in 1847, only eleven years after he was ordained into the Anglican church. When he arrived in Melbourne in 1848 the diocese had a population of 43 000, but pastoral work was handled by just three chaplains based in Melbourne, Geelong and Portland.
