The United States of America ( U.S.A or USA ), commonly known as the United States ( U.S or US) or America, is a sovereign country located mostly within North America and is divided up into 50 states. Forty-eight of these states along with the District of Columbia border each other between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
The history of the lands that became the United States began with the arrival of the first people in the Americas around 15,000 BC. Numerous indigenous cultures formed, and many saw transformations in the 16th century away from more densely populated lifestyles and towards reorganized polities elsewhere.
The term "United States", when used in the geographical sense, is the contiguous United States, the state of Alaska, the island state of Hawaii, the five insular territories of Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa, and minor outlying possessions.
